The Library of The Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia is seeking an Art Cataloger (full-time, two-year, grant-funded position). The starting date is no later than October 1, 2001. Review of applications will begin immediately.

Duties: Responsible for cataloging original works of art (oil paintings, sketches, drawings, prints, watercolors, sculptures, etc., spanning the 17th through the 20th centuries) according to national standards. Descriptions will include researching provenance, subject analysis, etc. Responsible for entering catalog records in OCLC, downloading to local system (Innovative Interfaces), and attachment of digital images to catalog record. Devises and coordinates work-flow and supervises imaging assistant.

Qualifications: B.A. in Art History or Visual Arts and an M.L.S. or equivalent degrees. Working knowledge of visual resources cataloging procedures,  standards and principles, including: MARC 21 Format for Bibliographic Data; the Anglo-American Cataloging Rules, 2nd edition, 1998 revision (AACR2R); Graphic Materials (1982, with revisions); Thesaurus for Graphic Materials I: Subject Terms (1995); Thesaurus for Graphic Materials II: Genre and Physical Characteristic Terms (1995); and The Art & Architecture Thesaurus (2000).  Familiarity with OCLC or RLIN.  Two to three years relevant experience. 

Environment: The Academy of Natural Sciences, a museum of natural history operating since 1812, undertakes research and public education that focuses on the environment and its diverse species. The Academy's Library is the oldest natural history library in the Western Hemisphere and its collections of printed books, art works, and  manuscripts serve Academy scientists and scholars from around the world.
