DIRECTOR, ARTS LIBRARY Yale University Library Minimum rank: Librarian III THE UNIVERSITY AND THE LIBRARY The University Library, which is a highly valued partner in teaching and research at the University, has more than 10.5 million volumes housed in the Sterling Memorial Library and 16 school and department libraries. It employs a dynamic and innovative staff of nearly 600 FTE who have the opportunity to work with the highest caliber of faculty and students, participate on committees and are involved in other areas of staff development. A full spectrum of library resources, from rare books and manuscripts to a rapidly expanding network of electronic resources, constitutes one of Yale's distinctive strengths. The Library is engaged in numerous ambitious projects such as the renovation of the main library building, the complete retrospective conversion of the Library's catalog, and various automation projects, which include network access to scholarly information and preservation imaging initiatives. THE ARTS LIBRARY The Arts Library incorporates organizationally the former Art & Architecture Library; the Arts of the Book Collection; the Classics Library; the Drama Library; and the Visual Resources Collection. The Arts Library supports several distinguished programs, including the Schools of Architecture, Art, and Drama; the Department of the History of Art; serves faculty, students, researchers and staff throughout the Yale community including those at the Yale University Art Gallery and the Yale Center for British Art; and visitors from Southern Connecticut region and beyond. A new Arts Library facility is presently being designed by Richard Meier & Partners as part of a master plan for the Yale arts area. For additional information, see web site at: 0000,0000,fefehttp://www.library.yale.edu/art/aapage.html RESPONSIBILITIES Reporting to the Associate University Librarian for reader services, the Director of the Arts Library is responsible for the overall administration, organization, and development of Yale's Arts Library and its constituent units. The Director manages all aspects of library service, collection development, budget administration (including endowments and grants), personnel management, and facilities planning. Directs a staff of 13.5 FTE, including 5.5 FTE librarians, 8 FTE support staff, and a number of student assistants, as well as holders of the Kress Fellowship in Art Librarianship. Working with faculty, students, senior library administrators, and library staff, will evaluate the services, policies, collections, electronic resources, and facilities of the Arts Library and will establish and implement plans for its continued development and improvement. The Director will coordinate these programs and collections with those of other libraries on campus. Is responsible for the ongoing development of digital imaging services and initiatives evolving in the Arts Library. The Director serves as a member of the Library Management Council, the group of senior department heads who work as a management team with the University Librarian and Associate University Librarians to set library-wide policies and engage in long-term planning. The Director advises and works closely with the Chairs of the Departments of the History of Art and of Classics, and the Deans of the Schools of Architecture, Art, and Drama, on library matters and is responsible for building strong partnerships with faculty and students, curators, librarians, heads of other University Library departments, and prospective donors. Participates in various committee assignments and is expected to demonstrate professional leadership and commitment. The Director will work closely with renowned architects and a team of Yale colleagues in designing a new Arts Library for Yale. QUALIFICATIONS Required: MLS degree from an ALA-accredited library school or an equivalent degree. Strong background in art, architecture, or art history, with preference given to candidates with relevant graduate degrees. At least 5 years of professional experience, with demonstrated administrative and supervisory experience and achievement in an academic or research library. Strong commitment both to collection building and to active, innovative public service programs, including providing access to information in digital forms. Ability to read at least one foreign language. Effective oral and written communication skills and demonstrated ability to work effectively and collaboratively with faculty, staff, students, and administrators in a complex and changing environment. Experience with space and facilities planning, obtaining and managing grants, and digital library development highly desirable.
