One of the largest fine press fairs in North America will be holding its
eighth international celebration of the Book Arts at Oak Knoll Fest VIII on
Saturday, October 13 and Sunday, October 14, 2001. The fest offers an
unique adventure for fine book lovers, collectors, and those wanting to
learn more about the book arts to intermingle with fine press book
traditionalists from France, United Kingdom, Canada and the United States.
Set in the historic, colonial town of Old New Castle, Delaware (on the
Delaware River), this two-day event connects fine presses and their books
with collectors, librarians, and booksellers.

Speaking on Saturday, October 13, 2001 will be Crispin Elsted of Barbarian
Press, located in British Columbia, Canada. Barbarian Press will be
celebrating its 25th Anniversary next year and Elsted is planning to share
the fascinating history behind the press, its achievements, and its future.

Crispin Elsted and his wife, Jan Elsted, started Barbarian Press in 1977 in
Kent, England, where the Elsteds worked with Graham Williams at the Florin
Press. The following year Barbarian Press moved to British Columbia,
Canada where it has remained to this day. The press’s publications range
from new translations of poetry and prose, Victorian melodrama, and new
poetry to bibliography, illustrated classics, and books on
wood engraving.

Speaking on Sunday, October 14, 2001 will be Nicholas and Mary Parry of The
Tern Press - one of Britain’s foremost fine presses - located in
Shropshire, England. The Parrys will be discussing what challenges,
obstacles and achievements they have experienced with The Tern Press during
the course of a year.

The Tern Press started in 1973 when Nicholas won first prize in an open
painting competition at the Welsh Royal National Eisteddfod. With the few
hundred pounds prize money, he bought his first printing press. From that
time until today, Nicholas and his wife have worked closely together
printing books. Nicholas also creates illustrations for their books using
wood engravings. The press’s publications range from medieval literature in
Oxford’s Bodleian Library to modern authors and poets.

Oak Knoll Fest Fine Press Exhibition will have private press printing
masters from France, United Kingdom, Canada and United States displaying
and selling their fine press books. Miniature book private presses will
also be displaying books.

In addition, Nicholas A. Basbanes, author of A Gentle Madness:
Bibliophiles, Bibliomanes, and the Eternal Passion for Books, will be at
St. Peters Hall on Saturday, October 13 from 1:30 PM to 2:30 PM to sign his
latest book entitled Patience & Fortitude: A Roving Chronicle of Book
People, Book Places, and Book Culture. This book is the sequel to A Gentle
Madness.

Oak Knoll will also hold its once-a-year, two-day 20% OFF BOOK SALE on all
antiquarian, new books, and Oak Knoll Press published titles in the
bookstore during the fair. (Books have to be bought at the bookstore during
the two-day fest to receive discount.) Oak Knoll Books is one of the
foremost specialists in antiquarian and new books about books, the history
of the book, and the book arts. Oak Knoll Press, a component of Oak Knoll,
is a scholarly publisher of books about books and annually publishes 40
titles in the aforementioned fields.
