----------------------------Original message----------------------------
Ruth and All Classicists:

In my angry remarks to Mr. D. I called the classics "cold dust and hard
marble." In
being snide to HIM, I may well have unintentionally offended some colleagues
in the
classics that I hold in high regard.

Study of the classics is of critical importance to the world's knowledge. The
field
requires a highly educated person who must know classical art, architecture
and
archeology, know paleography, read either Greek or Latin (or both) as well as
other
languages, deal with cumbersome technology (Dyabola, for example), and, in
the case
of librarians, be PERSONABLE.

I can honestly say that when I took my first graduate level course in Greek
Art, the
instructor was so PERSONABLE and ENTHUSIASTIC as well as knowledgable, that
I could
have easily traveled the classics path myself. Dr. Frances Stearns' manner
and
encouragement with her students in 1983 was contagious! Had she been a
person of the
type Mr. D. demonstrated via his messages, all of her students would have
detested
her and left that classics course with low regard for the field.
My angry characterization of the field as "cold and dust" is a stereotype
that was
intended only for Mr. D. He stated that he was RETREATING from our profession,
FACING the challenges we all face in our profession, and FLEEING to the assumed
comfort of another field. He will, I am sure, discover that every discipline
has its
challenges and negative moments.

And that is part of the point about the MANNER in which Mr. D. began this whole
discussion. He did not come across as a PERSONABLE man; rather as a person
who is
exceedingly angry and unhappy with people.

I think it would be a good idea to include stereotyping in the discussion
because all
of us librarians continue to suffer from it. Even the L-word is being dropped!

Ruth and others, please accept my sincere apology.

Ray Anne Lockard
