Speaking of Zola - and combining the two questions of patrons looking at art
and historical fiction, in his novel L'Assommoir there is a great
description of the working-class wedding party going to the Louvre to look
at "Art" - getting lost and exhausted, menaced by the Assyrian sculpture -
that sort of thing - quite vivid....

Dear Suzy,
I don't know if this counts as historical fiction, but nineteenth
century
    French
writer, Emile Zola wrote a novel called
"L'Oeuvre," (English translation, "The Masterpiece," written circa 1880).
It is
fiction, but it is said that the protagonist (the painter) was a composite
sketch of
a number of the artists that Zola knew (Cezanne. Manet, etc.). It also is
said that
Cezanne stopped talking to Zola because of the publication of this book. It
is an
interesting book, although a bit over dramatic at times. I hope this helps.
Bonne
chance.
Sincerely,
Sandra Rothenberg
