I thought that Ditchburn has made some good points, but he has rendered me, for one, completely unable to pay any serious attention to them by the gall he has spewed all over our profession and the rancor with which he has assaulted Ms. Benedetti. She is as entitled to her opinions about him as he is about our profession and, therefore, us. He should change his name from Ditchburn to Bridgeburn. He has certainly burned every one possible behind him in his flight from library science into the dust and cold marble of the classics. It is too bad that he, with so many good ideas about how to better our profession and so much energy to do so, has fled the challenge. One can only hope two things for him. First, that he, at some point in his life, gain an understanding of why he lacked the self-insight to flee the profession before completing his degree and taking on so much debt for a program he obviously detested all along. One wonders why he didn't move into a gradaute classics program - -something he apparently enjoys and that should make him a happier and more productive person -- sooner. Secondly, that he meet nothing but personalities similar to his own when he needs assistance at the reference desk or on the web while sheltering himself in classics' ivory tower. -- Ray Anne Lockard, Head Librarian Frick Fine Arts Library University of Pittsburgh Pittsburgh, PA 15260 Voice: 412-648-2411 Fax: 412-648-7568 E-Mail: [log in to unmask] "A book should be a ball of light in one's hands."
