The Museum: First opening in 1879 the Art Institute of Chicago has
grown to house world-renowned collections. Perhaps best known for its
19th century European paintings, the Art Institute has departments of
African and Amerindian Art, American Art, Architecture, Asian Art,
European Decorative Arts and Sculpture, and Ancient Art, European
Painting, Modern and Contemporary Art, Photography, Prints and
Drawings, and Textiles. A major building and expansion project
designed by Renzo Piano will commence shortly.

The Ryerson & Burnham Libraries: The Ryerson Library (built 1901) and
the Burnham Library of Architecture (founded in 1912) form a research
collection of national and international significance. Merged in
1957, the Libraries hold a research collection of 320,000 scholarly
works, including1,200 current serials subscriptions and 70,000
auction sales catalogs. The Reading Room, which constituted the
original Ryerson Library, was designed by Shepley, Rutan and
Coolidge, was restored to its original design and finishes in 1994.
The Libraries serve Museum staff, members of the Museum, students and
faculty of the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, and visiting
scholars.

Duties: Provides reference service at the Reference Desk on a
regularly scheduled basis and research services to museum staff on
demand. Responds to written, telephone, and email reference questions
as necessary. Assists the Senior Reference Librarian in all aspects
of the interlibrary loan operation. Participates in the development
and maintenance of the Libraries' intranet and internet web pages.
Oversees scheduling of orientations for new AIC staff, School of the
Art Institute classes, and other groups. Assists in providing
bibliographic instruction, training and orientations for new AIC
staff, School of the Art Institute classes, the Libraries' reference
staff and other groups and develops and writes related instructional
materials as assigned. Plans and oversees the work of volunteers and
interns on Reader Services special projects. Assists the Head of
Reader Services in both selecting and weeding Open Shelf collection
materials. Conducts research and pursues special projects as required.

Qualifications: Both entry level and early career candidates (1-2
years of professional experience) are encouraged to apply. MLS or
equivalent and background in art history required (advanced degree in
art history or related discipline preferred). Ability to communicate
clearly and concisely with a broad range of patron types from major
scholars in the field to undergraduate students and members of the
Museum is essential. Proficiency required in at least one foreign
language. Candidates must demonstrate ability to use a full range of
text and electronic resources in the arts and related disciplines and
a familiarity with web design. Candidates should be effective in both
one-on-one and group instruction. This position will report to the
Head of Reader Services and work closely with the Senior Reference
Librarian and other Reader Services staff. Full-time (35 hr/wk)
position; some nights and weekends required.

The Art Institute of Chicago offers a competitive benefits and
vacation package. Salary commensurate with experience. Starting range
for this grade is $29,600 - $33,300. Review of applications will
