COLLECTIONS LIBRARIAN
(Librarian II or III)
The MIT Libraries seek an experienced and enterprising Visual
Collections
Librarian to manage and develop the Rotch Visual Collections, a branch of
the
Rotch Library of Architecture and Planning. This is an exciting
opportunity to
work within the library system and with the faculty and students of the
School
of Architecture and Planning to build the collections and provide
electronic
access to them.
RESPONSIBILITIES: Leads the Rotch Visual Collections (RVC) in
developing
collections of slides, digital images, videotapes and other formats in
architecture, urban design, art history, archaeology and other
subjects.
Plans,
develops and integrates electronic access and web-based technologies for
its
collections. Works with faculty to provide visual media needed for
teaching.
With the Associate Rotch Librarian sets policy and develops services.
Supervises local processing and cataloging of slides and digital images
using
FileMaker-based database system. Supervises RVC staff; administers
budget;
manages facility and, with technical support, the computer infrastructure
of
the visual collections. Deals with copyright compliance. Serves on the
Branch
Managers Group, participates in system-wide initiatives, and serves on
committees and task forces as appropriate. Will participate in
professional
development and service activities.
QUALIFICATIONS: Required - ALA-MLS/MLIS; subject expertise or a degree
in
architecture, art or planning; excellent interpersonal skills; a strong
commitment topublic service; demonstrated knowledge of current visual
collections practices, emerging technologies and their applications;
initiative; flexibility; ability to lead and supervise. (At least five
years
professional experience and demonstrated professional growth and service
in
keeping with MIT Libraries’ standards for promotion are required for
appointment at Librarian III level.) Preferred - Graduate level study
in one
of the above subjects and a reading knowledge of one or more Western
European
languages.
HIRING SALARY: $41,000 minimum (Librarian II); $51,000 minimum
(Librarian
III).
Appointment level and actual salary will depend on experience.
