An Exhibition of Movable Books and Ephemera from the Collection of Geraldine Roberts Lebowitz

May 31-September 15, 2001

A resident of Boca Raton, Florida, Geraldine Roberts Lebowitz began collecting movable and pop-up books about eight years ago. The exhibit showcases 96 pieces from Lebowitz's collection of more than 700 books and is arranged by paper engineer, including: Nick Bantock, Roger Culbertson, Jim Deesing, James Roger Diaz, David Hawcock, Mick Inkpen, Vojtech Kubasta, Tor Lokvig, Jan Pienkowski, Lothar Meggendorfer, Kees Moerbeek, Ernest Nister, Ib Penick, Robert Sabuda, John Strejan, Ron Van der Meer, and Paul Wilgress.

The oldest book in the exhibit, Les animaux domestique, was published in France around 1901 and features the inner structures of several barnyard animals. The most recent book, Brooklyn Pops Up, published in the United States in 2000, was created to celebrate an exhibition of pop-up books co-sponsored by the Brooklyn Public LIbrary and the Movable Book Society.

Two related programs will be held at the Broward County Main Library while the exhibit is on display. An opening reception and program will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday, May 31. Geraldine Roberts Lebowitz will present a collector's point of view and paper engineer/illustrator Robert Sabuda will talk about the history of pop-up books. On Friday, June 1 at 10 a.m., Sabuda will present a slide lecture, "A Brief History of Pop-up Books and How They are Made." Copies of Sabuda's pop-up books will be available for sale and signing during the programs.

The lectures are sponsored by the Florida Center for the Book.
