Julie Mellby, Associate Curarator of Graphic Arts here at the Toledo Museum of Art, asked me to post this notice of an important symposium to be held in October, 2001.

The Art and Legacy of Michelangelo: A Symposium

On Saturday, October 6, 2001, the Toledo Museum of Art will host a one-day symposium in conjunction with the exhibition Michelangelo: Drawings and Other Treasures from the Casa Buonarroti, Florence. Organized by the High Museum of Art, Atlanta with the Casa Buonarroti, Florence, this exhibition will travel to the Toledo Museum of Art from September 21 to November 25, 2001.

This symposium brings together a diverse group of historian and authors to present current scholarship on Michelangelo's art and legacy. Moderated by the exhibition's guest curator, Gary M. Radke, the program will address central questions about the work and life of this extraordinary artist from his innovations as a draftsman, painter, sculptor, and architect, to his literary achievements as a poet. Scheduled speakers are Caroline Elam, Burlington Magazine; Alexander Nagel, University of Toronto; James Saslow, Queens College; Carel van Tuyll van Serooskerken, Teylers Museum, Haarlem; and William Wallace, Washington University, St. Louis. The symposium is open to the public free of charge but reservations are required. For more information on the symposium and purchasing tickets for the exhibition, please watch the Toledo Museum of Art's website at www.toledomuseum.org.
