----------------------------Original message---------------------------- On Saturday, June 9, ARLIS/NY will sponsor a trip to Planting Fields Arboretum State Historic Park, a former Gold Coast estate of over 400 acres located in Oyster Bay, Long Island. One of New York State's premier public arboretums and historic sites, Planting Fields contains former estate buildings, art works, greenhouses, gardens, woodland paths and outstanding plant collections. There are over 200 acres of woodland and miles of hiking trails. Planting Fields is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. We will visit Coe Hall, a 65-room former residence which is being restored to its 1920s appearance. Built between 1918-1921 over the foundations of the Coe family's previous home that had been destroyed in 1918, Coe Hall was designed by the New York architectural firm of Walker & Gillette in the Tudor Revival style. The interior of the house was decorated by Charles of London, a specialist in "Olde English" period rooms. There are murals by the artists Everett Shinn and Robert Chanler. The terraces surrounding Coe Hall were designed by the landscape architecture firm of Olmsted Brothers, which also landscaped the grounds. The integration of the house and its setting was very important with the most significant gardens located near the house for the family's enjoyment. A.R. Sargent created the Italian Blue Pool Garden in 1914-18 and Guy Lowell designed the Tea House in 1915. The Garden Court (Circular Pool, Sunken Garden, Vista Path, Rose Garden and Rose Arbor) is located on the south side of Coe Hall. Also involved with Planting Fields was the craftsman Samuel Yellin, the great Philadelphian metal worker. The Horticulture Library, containing over 7,000 volumes, is located in the historic Hay Barn, also designed by Walker & Gillette. Planting Fields Website: http://www.plantingfields.org.
