----------------------------Original message---------------------------- Colleagues, I need the input of Museum Librarians who are or have been faced with the following issue: We are involved in planning a New Library to open in 2006. The basic space of the Reading Room has been laid out, and we are now involved in figuring out where things will go in the space and, for the purposes of this posting query, examining what we will do about: An Exit security system for our collection: will it be human-based or will it be electronic-based? Our Library is non-circulating, except to Staff who have offices in the Museum, and this policy will not change with the opening of the new extension in which the Library will be located. We will be open to the Public at least as many hours as the Museum is open and perhaps more. We plan to have lockers in a hallway outside the Library for patrons' coats and backpacks. Should we install a Security Gate and tattle tape our collection? What kind of technology is now available, beside the 3M tattle tape system? Is it worth it for us to spend the money and staff time (even if volunteer time) to tattletape our 140,000+ collection as of 2006 and then to tattletape all our new titles as well as each current periodical title from 2006 forwards? Are there other issues/questions I've not asked? Should we use a human-based system? Museum Security will not devote a guard to the Library to check out-going patrons' materials. Do we devote a staff member to sitting at the Library exit to check exiting materials? Do we use a staff member who is at other times doing something else? Are there other solutions I've missed. Please reply on or off the list. PLEASE REPLY BY NEXT FRIDAY, May 11th. Many thanks, in advance.
