Dear ARLIS Members, As a member of ARLIS, we recently we received the results from Judy Donovan's (Hagerty Library) survey on typical art reference questions. Many of you responded about the people coming out of the woodwork with artwork found in grandma's attic (or at a local garage sale) who wanted to know the value of these works. In case you are not aware of it, there is a wonderful all-around reference tool that can be used as a starting point for these people. Since there are so many different types of artwork, it would be impossible to have a book or database with comprehensive values on all individual pieces of artwork. However, there is a book which gives information about the artist and basic values for their works. The first book on Judy's list was Davenport's Art Reference & Price Guide. The newly-published edition (2001/2002) contains biographical information on over 225,000 artists. It lists birth and death dates, nationality, birthplace or domicile of the artist, type of work the artist does(did) including major subjects upon which the artist concentrated in his/her lifetime, and pricing information for the artist. This book is intended to be a starting point for the reader. There are then many reference books, CDs, and on-line databases which are more specialized, e.g. one for prints, another for photography, another for oils, and on and on. While we are the publisher of Davenport's, this email is not intended as an advertisement. Instead it is sent as a follow up to Judy's research and to let you know that there are answers which can be easily found for your readers. For more information on this book, please feel free to visit our website at http://www.gordonsart.com/home.asp or call our office. We look forward to hearing your opinions. Sincerely, Jodie L.
