Gorman wins Highsmith Library Literature Award
**********************************************
Michael Gorman, dean of library services at the Henry Madden Library,
California State University, Fresno, is the winner of the 2001 Highsmith Library
Literature Award (formerly the G.K. Hall Award for Library Literature).

The award, a citation and $500 donated by Highsmith Press, recognizes an
author(s) who makes an outstanding contribution to library literature.

The American Library Association (ALA) published Gorman's winning book "Our
Enduring Values: Librarianship in the 21st Century," in 2000.

Gorman has authored numerous publications and articles in professional and
scholarly journals, and was the first editor of the "Anglo-American Cataloguing
Rules," second edition. He has given numerous presentations at international,
national and state conferences.

"Our Enduring Values: Librarianship in the 21st Century' was selected because
we felt it was a tireless treatment of issues facing all librarians, and a
well-written and well-thought-out discussion of values that would trigger much
further discussion and self-examination," Award Committee Chair Eric Johnson
said.

An active member of ALA, Gorman was president of the Library & Information
Technology Association (LITA), a division of ALA, 1999-2000, and contributing
editor of American Libraries,1997-1999. He has won numerous awards including
the ALA Melvil Dewey Medal.

Gorman is a fellow of the British Library Association and has taught at library
schools in his native Britain and the United States. He was a visiting
professor at the University of California, Berkeley, School of Library and
Information Science.

The Highsmith Library Literature Award will be presented Tuesday, June 19, at
the ALA Annual Conference in San Francisco.
