Dear ARLIS and VRA colleagues: The Cataloging Section sponsors participation at the ARLIS/NA annual conferences, mainly on issues concerning bibliographic control, access, authorized formats, but also topics related to these aspects, such as impact/correlation between reference and technical services, bibliographic instruction. The deadline for proposals for the year 2002 conference in St. Louis is May 1st, 2001. Many topics in need of discussion/clarification have been pointed out during the Cataloging Discussion Group, Cataloging Section meeting, SCIPIO Users Group meeting, and on other occasions. Here are some: Cataloging: Exhibition Catalogs Manuscripts Facsimile Visual materials Collection catalogs Special collections Collection level records Auction catalogs (SCIPIO) Cataloging/Reference Services: Impact of changes in the LCSH on reference services, users, OPACs SH -- providers and users How can catalogers help in Bibliographic Instruction Topics mentioned at the annual conference in 1999, but not pursued: Involvement of catalogers in bibliographic instruction Authority records as sources of information Please meditate upon these topics and take courage to structure ideas you might have already had on these topics, or decide to share your knowledge and expertise in any of these areas through a panel/session/workshop participation. The annual conferences are wonderful fori for sharing and enhancing our professional experiences. What could be more desirable than a direct solution from a colleague or the satisfaction of authoring one?! Please remember that the deadline is May 1st, 2001.
