Dear colleagues, I would like to tell you about a new book which has just been released on Southwestern Native American jewelry: Baxter, Paula. Southwest Silver Jewelry. Schiffer Publishing, March 2001. ISBN 0764312448. 212 pp., 300 color ill., 18 b & w. index, bibliog. $49.95 hardcover. The title was the publisher's doing and the book's subject could be made a little clearer by the omitted subtitle: "Navajo and Pueblo Jewelry, 1868 -1968." This book was done with the assistance of the Antique Tribal Arts Dealers Association, some notable collectors, and several major museums. The text reinvestigates and brings a bit more up-to-date the earlier studies by Adair, Bedinger, and Frank, on the subject. Chapter 8 is called "What Collectors Need to Know." Southwestern native silver jewelry and tourist era jewelry are examined up to the period that brought fine art jewelry into being. The contributions of master jewelers and educators Kenneth Begay and Charles Loloma are also featured. Thank you for letting me share this with you -- it was a lot of hard work and a lot of fun! The color photos came out very well.
