I'm wondering if it wouldn't be more helpful to have less indexes than
more. If the purpose of the handbook is to find someone, half the time you
don't know their status anyway until you start flipping through the
different indexes. Would it be feasible to have a People file and an
Institution file? Could one interfile the 2-liner entries in "Individual
Members - Indexed by Institution" with the list of Institutions? Then,
similarly, the Contacts for institutional members (2-liner: Name,
Institution) included with the Individual Members? One could indicate the
status by adding a simple letter code beside the name or institution, for
example "I" for Individual and "I" for Institutional member ;-)
OK, maybe something a little more distinctive like "C" for Contact :-) ...
Just a thought.
