are pleased to annouce of the 2000 Florida Artists' Book Prize of $2,000 award winner:
Thery McKinney, a resident of Ft. Lauderdale, Florida and a graduate of Florida State University with a B.A. in Fine Arts, is this year's winner. She is a relatively new book artist but for many years has worked as a painter and calligrapher. Her winning book is entitled: A to Z: 26 Ways to Art ([31] leaves; 17 x 22 x 6 cm.) It is a homage to the 26 artists (from Joseph Albers to Larry Zox) who inspired her to create an initial with the letter of the artists' last names. Each artist is someone who she enjoyed researching and who prompted her to 'copy' his/her style. In an edition of five, the book is hand-bound in cloth with accordion-style spine and was produced using an assortment of fine papers including Arches, Somerset, Saunders and Japanese rice papers. The hand-marbled endpapers were especially created by the aritst/author. Each alphabetic letter utilized additional materials and papers. The text was computer generated in Times New Roman 10 point type.
The Florida Artists' Book Prize was established in 1997. Serving on the jury this fourth year of the competition were: Ruth & Marvin Sackner of the Sackner Archive of Concrete and Visual Poetry (Miami Beach); Mata & Arthur Jaffe, whose collection of Books As Aesthetic Objects was recently given to the Library of Florida Atlantic University (Boca Raton); and Bonnie Clearwater, Director of The Museum of Contemporary Art (North Miami).
The prize-winning book and 29 other entries will be on exhibit in the Bienes Center's galleries beginning February 15th and running through March 19th, 2001. The award ceremony will be held on March 14th, 2001, from 6 to 8 p.m. in the Bienes Center.
