Admission free. The world of international contemporary art often seems to be composed of the same players year after year. Artists, curators, and critics make the rounds of the biennial art fairs; a select group of artists appears over and over in gallery and museum shows worldwide. There has been a broadening of the scene through the increasing participation of artists from South America and the Pacific Rim, but has this really changed the status quo, or have these artists simply adapted to the established language and code of international contemporary art? Is the kind of diversity suggested by the term "international" a reality? What criteria and critical consensus are required for an artist to become a recognized part of the international art scene? What qualifications are needed to become an international art professional? How do the roles of museums, curators, and critics intersect with the demands of the commercial side of the global art village? Can/should conscious efforts be made to shake up the stasis that some feel exists, or is this simply part of the inevitable homogenizing tendency of cultural marketplaces worldwide?
