Greetings past, present and future members of ARLIS/NA.

Last year, a new ARLIS/NA Strategic Plan (2000-2005) was released. The Plan
(located at http://www.arlisna.org/sp00to05.htm) contains goals and
objectives based on the Society's Vision & Mission, and a survey of the
membership. Goal II is "To develop stimulating and pertinent programs that
meet the needs and support the activities of all members and components of
the Society." Objective II.B is to "Develop financial resources to attract
the best speakers in our profession to ARLIS/NA conferences, workshops, and
meetings."

In response to this Plan, the Development Committee of ARLIS/NA has
commenced fundraising for a new Conference Speakers Fund which will provide
annual grants or awards for external speakers. This Fund will help the
Society introduce new voices, new perspectives, and new ideas to the
membership.

Our first fundraising event for the ARLIS/NA Conference Speakers Fund will
be The Silent Auction, taking place on Monday, April 2nd, 2001 from 5:30 pm
to 7:30 pm at the Wilshire Grand Hotel in Los Angeles.

Judith Herschman, the organizer of the Silent Auction, has already
circulated information to ARLIS-L and there is a website with details and
pictures at

As Chair of the ARLIS/NA Development Committee, I would like to invite (and
encourage) everyone (individuals, chapters, institutions, business
affiliates, exhibitors, advertisers, and subscribers) to support the
ARLIS/NA Conference Speakers Fund by contributing an item or gift basket to
the Silent Auction, by attending the event & bidding on the items, and/or by
making a direct cash donation to the ARLIS/NA Conference Speakers Fund.
