Don't miss it! Details follow: "The Virtual Reference Desk: Is it Here?" The Internet is expanding at a dramatic rate and is creating a fundamental change in the way people collect information and acquire knowledge. In the United States alone, over 45 million households were connected to the Internet in 1999 and the number of users is expected to grow by 25% each year. With the emergence of Web help services, libraries are no longer the lone providers of information; in fact, reference statistics in libraries throughout the country have been on a steady decline. Today's researchers need to find quickly information that is usable, relevant, authoritative, and verifiable. To meet that need, libraries must adapt our reference services and make them available in an environment that is not bound by time or physical space.
