INTRODUCTION
All over the world, the titles and contents of the great libraries, museums, art galleries and archives are becoming available on-line. While interoperable, technological standards are emerging, problems of
interoperable applications, tools, interfaces and usability remain.
The Maastricht McLuhan Institute (MMI) was set up to study and develop methods for knowledge organisation and knowledge management in a digital, distributed, multimedia world. The aim of the MMI is to create comprehensive strategies for searching, structuring, using and presenting digital resources more coherently and efficiently; to integrate past knowledge and to produce ordered knowledge that leads to new understanding and insights.
AIM
This year's seminar is concerned with integrating developments in finding aids (virtual reference rooms) with innovations in text and other analysis tools which will allow the most varied and rich access to cultural and historical information and knowledge. Following on from the experience gained in the last two cycles which focused on implications of digitalisation (1999) and interoperability of content (2000), this seminar will continue to explore how multimedia is transforming learning, knowledge organisation and knowledge management. There will be a particular focus this year on archives.
The cycle of attention given to all three kinds of memory institutions
(museum, library, archive) is conceived to be a building and integrative
process. The seminar provides an opportunity to gain exposure to the most recent developments in cultural heritage science and to interact with other professionals who share similar concerns.
The conference will be limited to a maximum of fifty persons, with speakers and discussions in the morning and small workshops with a maximum of fifteen in the afternoons. Kim Veltman, Scientific Director of the MMI, will lay a general foundation in the opening session. This will be followed by treatment of finding aids and analysis tools, as they are used or projected for archives and other memory institutions. On the last day a synthesis of the different topics will be offered by experts who will take a broader perspective on cultural heritage preservation and access. The afternoon discussion groups will be divided among those interests relevant to the current work of those in attendance.

Archivists, librarians and museum directors or professionals in senior
cultural heritage management; decision makers in cultural policy, strategic planning and development.
LOCATION
The seminar will take place at the Maastricht McLuhan Institute, Grote
Gracht 82, Maastricht, The Netherlands.
LANGUAGE
All seminars, presentations and debates will be in English.
FEE
NLG 1500 (Euro 681) includes access to the complete programme, daily lunches and refreshments, and admission to the cultural evening programme of the Amsterdam-Maastricht Summer University.

COURSE LEADER, MODERATOR:
Dr. Kim H. Veltman is Scientific Director of the Maastricht McLuhan
Institute and co-ordinator of a new European Network of Centres of
Excellence in Digital Cultural Heritage. His range of work crosses
international borders, from consultancies and research in new media, to a doctorate in history and philosophy of science, to the history of
perspective and Leonardo da Vinci, including numerous publications.
SPEAKERS, WORKSHOPS LEADERS:
Lou Burnard founded the Oxford Text Archive in 1976, has been the European Editor of the Text Encoding Initiative since 1989, and is currently the manager of the Humanities Computing Unit at Oxford University Computing Services. The Humanities Computing Unit brings together the Centre for Humanities Computing, the Humbul Humanities Hub, the Humanities Computing Development Team, and the Oxford Text Archive. He has also published several works on text encoding and SGML (ISO Standard Generalised Markup Language).
Peter Horsman currently works with the Archival School at the University of Amsterdam as the co-ordinator for the research programme. Previously he worked at the Netherlands State Archive as a director of the information policies department, and as a senior consultant for the Netherlands Digital Longevity project. For the FAO, he drafted a systems design specification for a knowledge-based record keeping and records management system according to the Yourdon methodology. He was chair of the International Council on Archives committee on information technology. He is a co-investigator in the
InterPHARES project setting standards for preserving and authentic
electronic records and developing policies, strategies, and standards for electronic records usage. He consulted various archival institutions on archives management and access systems.
Nicolaas Mars is Scientific Advisor at the Netherlands Institute for
Scientific Information Services of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences. He is also a professor in the Knowledge-based Systems Group at the Department of Computer Science, University of Twente, and an independent consultant on the Innovation of Scientific Information Processes.
Elmar Mittler is head of the State and University Library of Lower Saxony in G÷ttingen, one of the leading German academic libraries. This library is active in many German, European and international projects in the field of the digital library development (metadata, digitisation of journals, guides for internet resources etc.). He has been deputy director of the University Library in Freiburg/Breisgau (1970-1974), head of the Badische Landesbibliothek in Karlsruhe (1974-1979) and the University Library in Heidelberg (1979-1990) before he came to G÷ttingen in 1990. He is Honorary Professor at the Institut fnr Buchwissenschaft (University of Mainz) and at the University of G÷ttingen. He is also president of LIBER (Ligue des BibliothFques EuropTennes de Recherche) and works for several national and
international boards in the field of copyright, digitisation and library
consortia.
Michele Paoli collaborates with the Centro Ricerche Informatiche per i Beni Culturali of the Scuola Normale Superiore di Pisa. He has developed a textual search engine, called TReSy, for SGML/XML conformant documents along with some methodologies for the management of these documents. His research has focused in particular on the treatment of literary texts. This activity has resulted in the creation of web sites and CD-ROMS such as of "Corpus Informatico Belloriano", "Le Vite di Giorgio Vasari", "Vocabolario della
Crusca" and others. Manfred Thaller has been a senior research fellow at the Max Planck Institute for History since 1978. He has been responsible for the design and implementation of a general database oriented programming system for history (CLIO/KLEIO), which was the first software for the treatment of historical archives and documents. He also conducted research on a general methodology of historical computer science. He was the research director at the Humanities Information Technologies Centre of the University of Bergen, and
he currently teaches at the University of Cologne as Professor of Cultural Heritage Computer Science.
Anne Van Camp is currently Manager of Member Initiatives for the Research Libraries Group, Inc.(RLG), an international consortium of over 160 major research institutions. Prior to going to RLG, she was director of the Archives of the Hoover Institution at Stanford University for 8 years. Before that she was Vice President for Information Services at the Chase Manhattan Bank. She is currently serving on the Historical Advisory Committee for the US State Department. A fellow of the Society of American Archivists, she remains active in archival professional activities both nationally and internationally.
Arnold van Trotsenburg is a Business Consultant with a broad knowledge of customer business and Information Technology. He has extensive knowledge on Workflow and Imaging products of various manufacturers as well as ORACLE and other Realtional Database Systems. He began work on Document management during his time at Xerox Professional Document Services, and continues to work on several projects in these fields. He is currently a senior consultant at DCE Nederland B.V. and a Business Consultant and Senior Project Manager at Open Text International. Among other activities, he has
recently completed results in document routing, document archiving,
improvement, retrieval and printing, world-wide standard applications,
information streams and process improvement.
Patricia Young is Manager of the Professional Programs at the Canadian Heritage Information Network (CHIN), where she is responsible for access to resources for heritage professionals in museums, libraries and archives. Projects include the Heritage Forum, Learning with Museums, Canadian Museum Guide, Artefacts Canada, training, standards, and collaborative bibliographic databases such as the Conservation Information Network, Museology and Artists in Canada. She is also chair of the International Committee for Documentation (CIDOC) within the International Council of Museums (ICOM). Pat has worked at the Getty Information Institute as Head of the Vocabulary Program, where she was responsible for the Art & Architecture Thesaurus, the Union List of Artist Names, and the Getty Thesaurus of Geographic Names.
