I will be attending the MARBI meetings at ALA Midwinter as the ARLIS/NA
representative. The discussion papers and proposals on the agenda are
available at:

http://lcweb.loc.gov/marc/marcadvz.html

Of particular interest to ARLIS members who catalog or consult
electronic resources is Discussion Paper 2001-03, Types of Dates for
Electronic Resources in MARC 21 Formats. This paper reviews the
different types of dates for electronic resources that are used as
qualifiers in the Dublin Core Metadata Element Set and how they
correspond with defined MARC 21 fields.

The Dublin Core defines five different date types: Created, Valid,
Available, Issued, Modified. Some of these qualifiers refer to dates
connected with the production or modification of the resource itself;
others refer to dates connected with the subject matter or scope of the
resource (i.e. the "Valid" qualifier was defined to cover resources like
train schedules which are posted in advance of the date the schedules
take effect). These date qualifiers have proved difficult to map to MARC
21; the paper discusses various options, and asks a series of questions
which will serve as the basis of the discussion.

To which I would add:

Are there implications for art-related cataloging in this? For example,
material pertaining to exhibitions on musuem websites. Does your museum
post material about an upcoming exhibition prior to the opening? Or keep
material related to previous exhibitions on the website? Would it be
useful for someone cataloging a page devoted to an exhibition to be able
to enter these dates? If so, where on the MARC record? And what kind of
date qualifier would they get within the Dublin Core?

Are there any art-related dates, such as dates of sale or auction, that
have implications for the cataloging of electronic resources?

If you have any thoughts, send them along to me before Jan. 12.
