ARTS LIBRARIAN

The Pennsylvania State University Libraries seek an Arts Librarian for a
fixed-term (26-month) faculty
appointment May 2001-June 2003 in the Arts and Humanities Library and the
Architecture Library at the
University Park campus.

Responsibilities: Working closely with the Arts and Architecture Librarian,
the Arts Librarian will provide
reference in the Arts and Humanities and Architecture Libraries;
participate in instructional programs
that reflect sensitivity to diverse learning styles; build library
collections in the visual arts, architecture,
and landscape architecture; and assist in liaison and outreach activities
with the Departments of
Architecture, Art History, Landscape Architecture, and the School of Visual
Arts (which includes
programs in art education and integrative arts). This position reports to
the Head of the Arts and
Humanities Library.

Qualifications: ALA-accredited MLS or equivalent advanced degree;
familiarity with electronic
information resources; excellent interpersonal, decision-making, and
communication skills; and the
ability to work in a collaborative environment. Academic background or
equivalent experience in
architecture, art, art education, art history, landscape architecture, or
related disciplines and experience
working with diverse populations also desirable.

Salary and benefits: Minimum salary $35,000; actual salary dependent upon
qualifications and

Environment: The Arts and Humanities Library, one of 8 subject libraries in
the Pattee Library and
Paterno Library building complex, provides collections and services for the
fine and performing arts,
ancient Mediterranean studies, area studies, classics, history, Jewish
studies, languages, literature,
philosophy, religious studies, and related disciplines with holdings of
approximately one million volumes
and 2,000 subscriptions. The Architecture Library, a branch located in the
School of Architecture and
Landscape Architecture, provides collections and services related to
environmental design. Penn State
University, a land-grant institution, is a member of the CIC (Big 10)
consortium.  A recent U.S. News &
World Report survey ranked Penn State University as tied for 10th place
among public universities. The
libraries hold membership in ARL, OCLC, RLG, CRL, and the Digital Library
Federation. Collections
exceed four million volumes. The University Libraries are located at
University Park and 23 other
campuses throughout Pennsylvania, with about 6,000 faculty and staff and
nearly 40,000 students at
University Park (82,000 students system-wide). The University Park campus
is in State College, a
university town located in the heart of central Pennsylvania. State College
offers a vibrant community
with outstanding recreational facilities, a low crime rate, and excellent
