Archaeologies Past and Present at Columbia University

Any introductory text will describe archaeology as the lone social
science seeking to reconstruct past human behavior through material
remains. Many in the discipline now recognize its effect on present
social experiences as well.

The interpretation, presentation and ultimately the articulation of
archaeology-both the material culture of the past and the discipline
itself-is a critical constituent of our narratives of modernity. It
is likewise a point from which these ideologies are contested. Three
years ago, the University Seminar on Historic Monuments and Sites
opened to create an interdisciplinary forum to engage such issues.
The 2001 University Seminar will ask Columbia University Faculty
members to share with us not only what their archaeology projects
reveal about our past, but also about their impact on the present.
Our speakers include Lynn Meskell, Department of Anthropology, Joanna
Smith, Department of Art History and Archaeology, and Nan Rothschild,
Department of Anthropology. A fourth lecture for 20 February 2001
will be announced.

Our list of participants is still growing, but they represent a cross
section of academic disciplines and professional organizations. Our
program includes heritage conservators, historians, and
archaeologists as well as representatives from the nonprofit sector.
Specialists from a variety of institutions and professionals who may
not otherwise have been brought together now have an arena in which
to voice opinions and share knowledge on subjects of mutual interest.
While our lectures are open to the public, seminar associates receive
faculty privileges at Columbia, allowing for the use of libraries,
facilities, and other services. For more information, feel free to

Preservation or visit the web site at

The torrents had exposed ruins,
as if writing inscribed anew...
I stopped to question them,
but how does one question mute immortals?
At best their speech is indistinct.
