Since Sherman answered the first question I'll take a stab at the second
one.  I have noticed that many libraries classify their artist monographs in
N44, followed by an alphabetic cutter for the artists' last name.  My
schedule lists that number in parentheses, so it's probably obsolete, (but
hey how many of us out there use obsolete call numbers, just to keep books
on similar subjects together or because someone important insist on it?).

Perhaps someone who uses/used N44 could speak to this.
