Dear Cleo,

A book I catalogued years ago came to my mind--"Form and color in Greek
painting" by Vincent J. Bruno. While it is rather specifically about Greek
painting--there is a mention of the painting of statues on p. 50. And the
entire book presents an interesting overall picture of Greek color theory
and usage. Several mentions are made of sculpture and the book has a good
index. It was published by W.W. Norton in 1990. Hope this helps.

Subject: USE OF COLOR IN ANCIENT STATUES ????

Dear Colleagues,

We are trying to find papers, research, books that discuss the use of
color in ancient roman , greek et al ... statues according to history
records most statues were not white as we see them today but painted
.We are finding it very difficult to find any texts that discuss this
aspect of ancient sculpture.Apparently temples were also painted.
Can anyone help us - we would greatly appreciate any leads to finding
out more about tis intriguing subject.

Many, many thanks in advance

Cleo
