as an art bibliographer, policies of substituting microforms for print
copies mean that i can no longer tell whether art images are in color or
not. part of my nearly 30-year bibliographic project has been to identify
the print locations of works of art by african americans and indicating
whether they were in color. we now often have to see things on microfilm and
never know if the original image was in color or not.

Subject: print copies of general interest magazines

> Dear colleagues
>
> The University of Maryland recently adopted a policy of
> discarding the print copies of general interest magazines
> such as Time, Newsweek, U.S. News and World Report, Esquire
> and Peoples after the microfilm arrives (usually after one
> year). This policy came about as a result of space
> problems, binding costs, and the poor condition of the
> magazines after heavy use. I would like to hear from other
> libraries who have a similar policy, and how it affects
> arts and humanities students who need original images for
> their research. Any ideas or solutions would be
> appreciated!
