Dear Katherine,
Your summary reminded me of an american artist, Washington Allston (1779-1843).
He worked 25 years on a painting and died in his study in front of the still
unfinished work. My professor at GWU wrote an entire book on the topic:

Title:Washington Allston's unfinished masterpiece Belshazzar's feast (1817-1843)
:millennial desire and social conservatism in the new American Israel /
Author(s):Bjelajac, David Voss.
