POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT

 Assistant/Associate/Full Curator
 College of Architecture and Landscape Architecture
 University of Minnesota

 The assistant/associate/full curator provides leadership and vision for

 the
 Visual Resources Collection (VRC) in the College of Architecture and
 Landscape Architecture (CALA). The VRC includes 110,000 slides and
 10,000
 digital images to support student and faculty research and educational
 activities. CALA provides design education to approximately 400
 undergraduate and graduate students in the areas of architecture and
 landscape architecture. With approximately 22 full-time faculty, 60
 part-time faculty, and 35 staff, the college includes two academic
 departments (Architecture and Landscape Architecture) and three centers

 (Design Center for American Urban Landscape, Building Research, and
 Design
 Institute). Three of the full-time faculty are architecture or
landscape

 architecture historians, who use the VRC regularly. Additionally, eight

 to
 ten design faculty use the VRC each semester.

 The curator reports directly to the CALA assistant dean for
 administration,
 supervises staff in the CALA Visual Resources Collection (2 full-time
 ASCME/civil service and 2-3 part-time student positions), and works in
 close collaboration with the associate dean for academic affairs in
 setting
 goals and providing direction for the VRC. The curator has full
 responsibility for management and development of the college s
 collection
 of 110,000 slides plus growing collection of approximately 10,000
 digital
 images. The curator, in consultation with an advisory group, is
 responsible
 for the planning, organization, and implementation of programs to meet
 the
 college s goals for integration of visual resources and associated
 technology with CALA curriculum and research activities, including
 expansion of the electronic/digital complement to the physical/analog
 slide
 collection.

 RESPONSIBILITIES:
 7       Manage collection of nearly 100,000 slides and growing
 collection
 of digital surrogates
 7       Supervise all aspects of collection, including acquisitions,
 cataloging, database development and facility improvements
 7       Collaborate with faculty and staff on developing applications
of

 digital imaging technology
 7       Supervise VRC staff
 7       Interpret copyright policy for publication and educational
 fair-use

 QUALIFICATIONS
 Essential
 7       Master s degree in hand at time of appointment
 7       For assistant curator title, minimum of three years of
 increasingly
 responsible experience in curatorial or closely related position. For
 associate curator title, minimum of five years of increasingly
 responsible
 experience in curatorial or closely related position.  For curator
 title,
 minimum of  eight years of increasingly responsible experience in
 curatorial or closely related positions
 7       Experience in a slide collection
 7       Knowledge of computing and technology related to a slide
 operation,
 including email, word-processing, spreadsheets, and database programs
 7       Knowledge of scanning process and digital image manipulation,
 storage and publication
 7       Knowledge of electronic delivery of information and images;
 7       Knowledge of  copyright issues in education
 7       Demonstrated excellent oral and written communications skills
 7       Demonstrated ability to interact effectively with a diverse
 group
 of people

 Desired
 7       Knowledge of at least one foreign language, preferably Italian,

 French
 7       or German
 7       Degree or significant coursework in art/architectural history
 and
 library/information science or related fields of study
 7       Five or more years experience in curatorial positions
 7       Supervisory experience
 7       Background in architecture, landscape architecture, urban
 design,
 or design

 Appointment
 The assistant/associate/full curator is a full-time, 12-month, annually

 renewable academic professional appointment. Salary is commensurate
with

 qualifications and experience.  The position will be filled as soon as
 possible.
