Broward County Library's BIENES CENTER FOR THE LITERARY ARTS, announces the exhibition opening and publication of: ABC BOOKS AND RELATED MATERIALS: Selections from the Nyr Indictor Collection of the Alphabet October 15, 2000 - January 15, 2001 The exhibit features 137 objects from the Bienes Center's collection of approximately 2,000 alphabet books and related materials and is arranged by language including: ARABIC, CAJUN, CHEROKEE, CHINESE, DANISH, DUTCH, EGYPTIAN HIEROGLYPHICS, ENGLISH, ESPERANTO, FINNISH, FRENCH, GERMAN, GREEK, HEBREW, HINDI, HUNGARIAN, ITALIAN, JAPANESE, KOREAN, NORWEGIAN, POLISH, PORTUGUESE, RUSSIAN, SERBO-CROATIAN, SIGN LANGUAGE (English), SPANISH, SWAHILI, SWEDISH, THAI, UKRAINIAN, AND YIDDISH. More that two dozen formats are represented including: BOOKS, ADVERTISEMENTS, ARTISTS' BOOKS, CARD GAMES, COOKIE CUTTERS, FLAGS, GAMES, GREETING CARDS, JIGSAW PUZZLES, MINIATURE BOOKS, PAPER WEIGHTS, POP-UP BOOKS, RUBBER STAMPS, SHOES, UMBRELLAS AND WRAPPING PAPER. The earliest book on display is: #17, The English Primer; or, An Easy introduction to reading, published in London in 1819; the most recent is: #89, Some Alphabets: poems, prose and other: an incomplete compilation of alphabetic writings / by Nyr Indictor, published in Chappaqua, NY in 1998.
