NEW POSITION CATALOGER, DUMBARTON OAKS LIBRARY Function: Performs original and complex copy cataloging for a distinguished library (approximately 172,000 volumes) with world-renowned collections in Byzantine and medieval studies, garden history and landscape architecture, and Pre-Columbian studies. Cataloging and associated authority work are done using SIRSI, HOLLIS, and OCLC, following Anglo-American Cataloging Rules, 2nd edition, revised (AACR2r), and Library of Congress policy and classification scheme. Dumbarton Oaks has recently integrated cataloging processes from three distinct library collections. Reports to Head Cataloger. A new library facility is being designed with completion expected in 2004. Duties: 1- Performs original and complex copy cataloging in a variety of languages for monographic and non-print materials following current national standards for bibliographic description, authorities work, and subject analysis. 2- Helps develop and maintain quality control procedures for cataloging and processing of materials. 3- Participates in long-range planning and setting priorities for Catalog Department, and the design and refinement of cataloging work procedures. 4- Assists in training and oversight of library technicians. 5- Performs related duties as needed. Qualifications: MLS from an ALA-accredited program required; BA in humanities field preferred. Reading knowledge of foreign languages. Cataloging experience (academic or research library preferred). Thorough knowledge of cataloging tools, standards, and conventions. Strong computer skills, including experience using OCLC or RLIN and integrated library systems. Ability to work effectively in a collaborative environment. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills in order to successfully contribute to an evolving work situation requiring flexibility and versatility. Grade 55: salary range $32,300-51,000. 35-hour work week. Excellent benefits.
