Fine Arts Librarian

The University of Virginia Library is seeking an innovative, energetic
leader who will envision and direct the future of the Fine Arts Library;
and aggressively evaluate, plan for and implement services that will
ensure the integration of traditional activities with new technology in
the library of the future.  The University and the Libraries have a strong
commitment to achieving diversity among faculty and staff.

Environment: The Library system consists of eleven libraries that serve
the sciences, social sciences, humanities, arts, and the schools of
architecture, education, and engineering, plus independent libraries for
health sciences, law, and business. The libraries support 12,000
undergraduates, 6,000 graduate students and 1,600 teaching faculty. The
Library is a leader in developing digital resources. Information about the

page at http://www.lib.virginia.edu. Thomas Jefferson's historic Grounds
and Academical Village are the focal point of the University.

The Fiske Kimball Fine Arts Library, the University's art, architecture
and drama library, houses a collection of 154,375 monographs, 500 journal
subscriptions (both print and electronic), 194,650 slides, an electronic
classroom and a rare book collection. The Fine Arts Library provides
specialized reference service, reserve collections, and user education to
the academic community. Online services for the Fiske Kimball Fine Arts
Library are coordinated from the Library's web page at
http://www.lib.virginia.edu/fine-arts/index.html. The Library system is in
the early stages of planning a new, combined arts and music library.

Responsibilities: Reporting to the Coordinator for the Arts Libraries, the
Fine Arts Librarian manages the services, collections and operations of
the Fine Arts Library.  Provides leadership in both developing traditional
collections and implementing innovative services.  Establishes strong
relationships with faculty and students to plan and implement information
and instructional services.  Coordinates collection development for art,
architecture and drama.  Manages a staff of one librarian and 4
paraprofessionals.  Oversees the budget and the facility.  Works
cooperatively with the Library's Administration to plan and implement
library-wide priorities.

Required qualifications: Master's degree in library science or a related
field.  Background in and knowledge of arts disciplines. Second Master's
degree in an arts-related field preferred.  Supervisory and/or management
experience.  Understanding of current issues in academic libraries and
visual resources collections. Familiarity with effective methods of
instruction and scholarly research.  Commitment to diversity and ability
to work with diverse groups of users and staff.  Knowledge of and ability
to use computer information technologies.  Ability to work effectively in
a team environment. Excellent oral, written and interpersonal
communication skills.  Strong customer service orientation.  Commitment to
professional growth and to encouraging professional development of library
personnel.  Familiarity with Western European or Asian languages
preferred.


Salary and Benefits: Salary competitive, depending on qualifications.
General faculty status.  The University of Virginia offers excellent
benefits, including 22 days of vacation and TIAA/CREF and other optional
retirement plans.
