DIRECTOR, VISUAL RESOURCES DEPARTMENT OF ART HISTORY UNIVERSITY OF CHICAGO The Visual Resources Library of the Department of Art History is located in the Cochrane Woods Art Center, where it maintains a collection currently numbering more than 375,000 slides. In recent years the collection has increased by roughly 7,500 slides/annum. The collection supports the work of 15 faculty and approximately 40 graduate students at varying stages of their studies. Management of the Collection includes oversight of the Epstein Photographic Archive, an collection of more than 150,000 copy photographs, located nearby in the University's Joseph Regenstein Library. (http://www.lib.uchicago.edu/e/artres/epstein/description.html) The Director of Visual Resources oversees the production, cataloguing, and re-filing of slides, computer imaging; the addition of digitized files into the Visual Resources database; purchase and maintenance of classroom, slide, video, and film projectors and computers; reference assistance and collection orientation for new users. The Director reports to the Chair of the Department of Art History and is responsible for hiring and supervising one half-time professional and 10-12 part-time graduate student assistants. QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE: Required: Graduate degree in art history, fine arts, or architecture; knowledge of at least one European language (French, German, or Italian preferred) and two-to-five years' experience in visual resource collections; strong working knowledge of current photographic and digital technologies. Desired: MLS; familiarity with existing and emerging core standards for image description; supervisory experience, grant-writing experience; ability to communicate well orally and in writing. Interest in establishing close working relations with University Library administrators. Appointment salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
