Dear ARLIS member, Oak Knoll Press is now distributing a published work by the American Antiquarian Society. - ^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^ A Checklist of American Newspaper Carriers’ Addresses 1720-1820 Compiled by Gerald D. McDonald, Stuart Sherman, and Mary Russo ^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^ The newspaper carrier’s address, a printed holiday greeting, was a unique early American poetic form. Each New Year’s Day, newspaper carriers around America and Canada distributed printed verses to their customers in hope of a hefty tip. Often highly amusing and occasionally quite socially aware, these broadsides eulogized the dutiful carrier of the year gone by. For the first time, these addresses have been compiled and assembled in bibliographic form. Not only are these addresses fascinating cultural records, they are also important literary documents as well. Some of America’s most prominent men of letters, such as Benjamin Franklin and Daniel Webster, supplied the poetic addresses. A group of Hartford poets, called the “Connecticut Wits,” Theodore Dwight, Richard Alsop, Lemuel Hopkins, and Joel Barlow, provided a strong satirical voice in the carrier address form. Rarely did they allow an event of the previous year to pass by unnoticed. The undertaking was begun by Gerald McDonald in the mid-1930s with the assistance of the New York Public Library. Since Mr. McDonald’s death, the project has become a collaborative venture of Stuart Sherman, Mary Russo and the American Antiquarian Society. 940 American and 61 Canadian addresses are indexed.
