The Frances Loeb Library at the Harvard Design School seeks qualified
applicants for the position of Head of Public Services.  The job

TITLE:  Head of Public Services, Frances Loeb Library, Harvard Design
School

GRADE/JOB FAMILY:  58/Library

REPORTS TO:  Librarian of the Frances Loeb Library/Assistant Dean for
Information Services

RESPONSIBILITIES

- oversees all aspects of the Public Services Department of the Frances
Loeb Library including circulation, reserves, interlibrary loan,
shelving, reference, and bibliographic instruction;

- hires, trains, and supervises four circulation assistants, setting and
monitoring performance standards; supervises all circulation and reserve
desk activities; with the Librarian, establishes policies and procedures
in support of library goals; with the circulation staff, develops new
systems and services to increase efficiency of operations;

- provides in-depth reference services and research guidance in person,
by telephone, mail and via the Internet to students, faculty and
community of outside researchers using HOLLIS, card catalogs, and print
and electronic resources; schedules reference librarians and assistants;
trains and supervises reference assistants to provide basic reference
service for evenings and weekends;

- responsible for managing bibliographic instruction programs including
tours and presentations, and for the creation of printed and electronic
reference guides and other self-help tools; works with faculty to
present bibliographic instruction programs for students in the classroom
and the library;

- conducts searches and provides training on the use of electronic
databases including those available through HOLLIS, CD-ROM databases,
and sources available through the web; develops search strategies after
user interviews and delivers results in a timely manner; investigates
other electronic resources as part of developing the library's
collections and home page; ultimately responsible for all mediated
online searching within the library;

- responsible for managing the library's interlibrary loan and document
delivery operations, training and supervising staff, and identifying and
implementing new methods of document delivery service within and outside
the university;

- participates in team coordination of the development of the library's
web pages, and oversees the development and maintenance of pages by the
department;

- works as part of the professional team of librarians to develop new
services and programs; responsible for an area of collection development
as a part of the professional team;

- maintains statistics for public service activities using a variety of
methods including HOLLIS's distributed reporting GQL software; provides
monthly summaries of departmental activities, annual statistical
summaries, and other reports as needed;

- serves on relevant university library committees and GSD committees,
and represents the library at regional and national meetings.

REQUIREMENTS

ALA-accredited library degree (MLS) or equivalent, educational
background and/or work experience in architecture, landscape
architecture, urban design or closely related field.  Minimum of 5 years
experience in a public services environment, with demonstrated ability
to initiate new library services; proven managerial and organizational
skills, with excellent written and oral communication ability.
Competency in an electronic environment.  Willingness to work
collegially and ability to lead in a team environment. Flexibility and
judgement needed to effectively contribute to an evolving work
situation.
