----------------------------Original message----------------------------
ARLIS colleagues,

We often find ourselves in a situation where we would wholeheartedly
embrace an opportunity such as Linda outlines below, only to say,
"Gosh, I wish I had the time..." Well, you might substitute
something a bit more colorful or vernacular for "gosh" but I believe
you get my point.

Having participated in just such a CAA session at the 1994 annual CA
conference "Which History of Photography: Rethinking the Literature
and History of Photography," co-moderated with Max Marmor, I can
speak to both the time committment and the rewards of such an
enterprise. Max and I began planning the session in 1992 and it
required considerable effort to pull the program together. Our
speakers included a photography curator, a faculty member who
specializes in photography, and a Ph.D. student. The program was
well attended and led to the publication of a special issue of Art
Documentation on this topic, complete with the speakers' papers and
an additional essay and annotated bibliography by myself (v.13, no.4
(Winter 1994)). Besides the obvious benefits to our planning,
writing, and editing skills -- and of course our vitas -- we had the
privilege to represent our ARLIS colleagues at the CAA conference and
engage in exactly the sort of intellectual enterprise that all too
often we do not find or make the time for.

Even if you can not participate in the 2001 CAA conference, I urge
you to work with your colleagues on program ideas for the 2002, 2003,
2004, etc. conferences. Give yourself the permission engage in just
such an opportunity as Linda presents.

Cheers!

Peter Blank

>This is a partial resend of an announcement I made

>I have not received any suggestions or offers yet

>For those ARLIS/NA members who are also members of our

>First, you may recall my prior overview of CAA's
