----------------------------Original message---------------------------- Dear ARLIS/NA members and friends, Plans for ARLIS/NA's 29th annual conference in Los Angeles are coming together quickly, and March 2001 is just around the corner. Our conferences are unique, planned from stem to stern by wonderful ARLIS/NA members who volunteer their time for well over a year. Your hosts in 2001 are the members of ARLIS/Southern California. The annual conference is ARLIS/NA's premier membership event, with continuing education workshops tailored to the needs of our members, stimulating sessions that present the latest in our field of visual arts information, trade exhibits of all kinds --- and of course, the best tours and parties on the continent. Each year, generous Chapter donations help the Society to offer some very special conference events. Most recently, in 1999 at the Vancouver conference, it was the well-used Internet room, and in March 2000 at the Pittsburgh conference, it was a rousing Welcome Party (an event especially enjoyed by first time attendees). Regional Representatives on the Executive Board will be in touch with Chapter officers soon about making a conference donation, and instructions for sending it to Headquarters. Here's a tiny taste of what to expect from March 29 to April 4, 2001. If not exactly celebrity-studded, the Los Angeles conference will nevertheless be a glamorous Tinseltown event: The Saturday evening Plenary Session is titled, "Hollywood Design: Decadence, Glamour, Fantasy, Modernism, and Opulence in 20th Century Southern California." Convocation will take us to the Getty Museum in Santa Monica for a late afternoon buffet on an outdoor terrace, and then ceremonies in the Getty theatre. Tours include a nighttime tour of L.A. neon aboard a double-decker bus, east L.A. and south central mural art, the Gene Autry Museum of Western Heritage, San Juan Capistrano, architectural tours on foot and on wheels, and much much more. Our hotel is the newly renovated Wilshire Grand. Sound good? The conference web site has everything you need to know and more; take a moment to check it out.
