----------------------------Original message---------------------------- ARCHIVIST, The Cleveland Museum of Art. The CMA Archives consist of approximately 2100 cubic feet of paper documents, photographs, CMA publications, scrapbooks, video and audio tapes, films, posters, slides, and electronic files. Dating from the 1880s to the present, these materials are used by Museum staff and scholars to research the history of the Museum and its collection, the evolution of CMA exhibitions and other projects, the social background of the major art movements of the twentieth century, and the social and cultural history of the Cleveland area. Responsibilities: Plans and directs the activities of the museum Archives, a separate department which reports to the Head Librarian. Responsibilities include acquisition, appraisal, preservation, arrangement and description of the permanently valuable records of The Cleveland Museum of Art in all formats including electronic media and making these records accessible to museum staff and other appropriate researchers within the bounds of established procedures and regulations; plans and directs the records management program which ensures the transfer of noncurrent departmental records to the Archives, and attends to storage, retrieval and disposition of all museum records according to standard records management practice; represents and promotes the archives within the museum and to the research community at large. Archivist encodes finding aids and other products in HTML/SGML and assists in the design of the Archives' website. The position supervises 1 full time Assistant Archivist and 1 part time Archives Technician, including hiring, training, and evaluation; volunteers and interns may also be supervised. Archivist establishes goals and monitors workflow; prepares budget and annual report. Qualifications required: Masters degree in history or library science, including relevant coursework in archives administration or certification as a professional archivist. A minimum of 5 years experience supervising an archives and records management program, including staff supervision. Ability to communicate clearly, both orally and in writing; strong problem-solving and interpersonal skills. Qualifications preferred: Knowledge of automated solutions to archival procedures including EAD, digital solutions, the Internet, and relevant software such as Wordperfect, Windows and MSAccess; knowledge of art history and museum operations. Experience with design of archival offices and storage, as well as in moving an archives will be of special interest since a major facilities initiative is now being undertaken by the museum.
