CLEOPATRA WEB SITE UNVEILED FOR THE PUBLIC
The Art Institute of Chicago has recently unveiled Cleopatra: A Multimedia
Guide to the Ancient World, an interactive web site accessible via the
World Wide Web (http://www.artic.edu/cleo/). In March 1997, the Art
Institute debuted the touchscreen computer program with the same name in
its Galleries of Ancient Art. The creation of the Cleopatra web site marks
the museum's continuing use of computer technology as an interpretive
learning tool. Both the computer program within the museum, as well as the
new web site, are designed to increase the understanding of ancient art,
add historical and cultural context to works of art, and inspire close
observations of these works.

The Cleopatra link (named for easy location on the Art Institute's web
site) showcases the same 18 works from the Art Institute's collection that
are featured in the existing Cleopatra program using features such as
video, maps, a timeline, a pan/zoom object viewer, fully bi-lingual
presentation in English and Spanish and a glossary. The web site delivers
45 QuickTime movies with audio and subtitles which allow the user to
explore the ancient cultures of Egypt, Greece, and Italy. Each of these
movies reveal chronologies and geographic origins of the art works, as well
as providing a political and social context of the times and places in
which they were created. There are
two sizes for each movie that will automatically download according to the
user's Internet connection and computer platform.

The lesson plans that accompany the Cleopatra web site offer a wide range
of learning tools for teachers to use in the classroom. For each individual
lesson plan, specific skills and focuses are identified, academic subject
areas and thematic connections are delineated, and instructional materials
are listed, along with step-by-step procedures. Each plan concludes with
a list of the Illinois State Board of Education learning goals it fulfills.
This helpful classroom material can be used as both a pre- and post-museum
visit resource.

Cleopatra web site development was made possible by the generosity of the
Elizabeth F. Cheney Foundation. It was adapted from the original
kiosk-based program, which was supported by charitable gifts from The Getty
Grant Program and the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation.
