Hello Dahlings:
Watching the late TV news tonight, just heard that the LA Lakers Victory
Parade (for those of you living on another planet, the Lakers are the
NBA--National Basketball Association--champions) will commence at 2nd and
Figueroa, just north of the Wilshire Grand tomorrow (Wednesday) morning and
will proceed south to the Staples Center. Maybe some of you will see some of
it broadcast live or rerun on the news later in the day. FYI--if you
do--this is the immediate neighborhood of your 2001 conference hotel.
Also FYI--check out a beautiful spread on Los Angeles architect Frank Gehry
in a feature article on his architecture around the world in the June 26 TIME
Magazine. He's on the cover too, with the tag, "Frank Gehry Rocks!"--an
allusion to his newest project--the Experience Music Project--opening next
week in Seattle. The article, written by Richard Lacayo, features gorgeous
photography by Gregory Heisler. Its hard to believe Gehry is 71 and that it
was 19 years ago "he was named Architect of the Year by his peers in
California [and he used] the opportunity to accept his prize with a talk
titled 'I'm not Weird.' " Less than 10 years ago he had more projects on
hold than completed. Now cities all over the world are lining up to get him
to do for them what he's done for Bilbao.
When you come to LA next year you can sample Gehry, Meier, Hodgetts & Fung,
and Moore, not to mention the other Frank (FL Wright), Neutra, Schindler,
Greene and Greene, and many more. . . .
