POSITION: Head, Architecture and Fine Arts Library

SALARY: $34,000 minimum
12 month appointment
JOB SUMMARY: The Architecture and Fine Arts Librarian serves as Head of the
Architecture and Fine Arts (AFA) Library, a branch library within the George
A. Smathers Libraries System. Incumbent is responsible for the development,
coordination, and provision of the library's programs and services which
include a wide range of public, technical, and collection management
functions. Allocates resources and is responsible for the supervision and
management of staff, facilities, and equipment. Plans, develops, and
delivers responsive and innovative service initiatives to meet the evolving
information needs of the University's faculty, staff, and students.
Develops and manages the collections to support research and instruction
associated with the College of Design, Construction and Planning, and the
School of Art and Art History.
RESPONSIBILITIES
1. As Head of the Architecture and Fine Arts Library, defines goals;
establishes objectives and priorities; develops, implements, and evaluates
plans, policies and procedures that define and support the library's
services and programs.
2. Has general responsibility for managing AFA's public service
programs, collections, technical service functions, and facilities.
Allocates resources and responsibilities, manages budget, supervises
personnel, prepares statistical and other reports, and communicates with
other library units.
3. Directly supervises Assistant Architecture and Fine Arts Librarian
and provides leadership and guidance for 3.5 FTE paraprofessional staff and
4.5 FTE plus student assistants.
4. Has general responsibility for the reference and instruction programs
and participates in them by providing reference service, training
individuals and groups in information retrieval and use, and creating
handouts and web pages that support direct assistance as well as independent
learning.
5. Plans and coordinates the effective use of the Library facilities for
staff, services, resources, and equipment. Coordinates efforts with
appropriate library and college officers.
6. Keeps abreast of new technologies and demonstrates skill in using
them to enhance library services.
7. Coordinates selection of materials to support the College of
Design Construction and Planning, and the School of Art and Art History.
a. Recommends and monitors budget allocations for assigned
programs to ensure judicious expenditure according to priorities throughout
the year.
b. Maintains active liaison relationship with departments served.
Keeps informed of academic program developments. Informs clientele about
relevant library issues.
c. Develops collection management policies or profiles based on
assessments of program needs.
d. Selects library resources in all formats in support of program
needs from such vehicles as gifts, approval plans, and dealer catalogs.
e. Provides the essential reference tools for research in
subjects of interest to program constituents.
f. Makes decisions or recommendations on cataloging, location,
preservation, maintenance, and retention of library resources.
g. Provides guides and other aids, in a variety of formats, to
enhance effective understanding and use of collections and services.
8. Contributes to the Library, the University, and the profession
through substantive involvement in such activities as committee work,
research, publishing, and participation in professional organizations.
9. Assists with development activities of the Library and academic
departments to enhance services and resources through gifts and grants.
10. Implements Affirmative Action program of the University of
Florida within assigned responsibilities.
11. Participates in planning, policy formation, and departmental
decision-making relating to H & SSS services, collections, and new
technologies.
QUALIFICATIONS
Required
1. Master's degree in Library Science from an ALA-accredited library
school.
2. Relevant professional experience and/or expertise in architecture,
building construction, fine arts, or related fields.
3. Demonstrated ability to interact effectively with library staff and
with faculty, students, and other library users in a complex research
university.
4. Excellent planning, analytical, and organizational skills.
5. Demonstrated effective experience as a supervisor and the ability to
lead and develop staff.
6. Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
7. Experience with library technologies, including online and Internet
resources, and experience with the development of integrated Web resource
pages.
8. Experience with PC hardware and various Windows-based applications.
Preferred
1. Graduate degree in architecture, building construction, fine
arts, or related fields.
2. Administrative and supervisory experience in a branch library.
3. Academic library background in collection development and
management, public services, or technical services.
BACKGROUND
The Architecture and Fine Arts Library is one of three research branch
libraries (the other two are Education and Music) that are part of the
Humanities and Social Science Services Department. Opened in 1965, the AFA
Library supports a "primary" clientele of over 100 faculty and approximately
2,000 majors in the School of Architecture, the M. E. Rinker, Sr. School of
Building Construction, the departments of Interior Design, Landscape
Architecture, and Urban and Regional Planning, and the School of Art and Art
History. The library maintains a substantive collection of more than
102,000 volumes and ranks as the largest visual arts library in the
Southeast.
The periodical collection includes about 2,700 titles with approximately 450
current subscriptions, 1,400 architectural drawings and photographs; 20,000
microform units; 6,000 art post cards; over 1,000 historic preservation
documents created by the College of Design, Construction and Planning; and
several hundred student projects from landscape and construction
