----------------------------Original message----------------------------
Dear ARLIS/NA members and friends,
Following up on the announcement made some weeks ago about ARLIS/NA's new
management services firm, I would now like to update you on the status of
Headquarters transition.
The Society's new Executive Director, Elizabeth Clarke and her staff
continue to work hard on the many tasks and myriad details that encompass
ARLIS/NA's transition to its new Headquarters in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada.
This second move in as many years has not been entirely seamless, resulting
in some unique challenges. But it is most important for you to know that
the transition is moving along successfully, as expected. The bonus has
proved to be unexpected opportunities for positive change and introducing
improvements to our headquarters processes.
Chief among these is the membership database, which will be undergoing a
thorough review and restructuring in the coming year to respond to such key
requirements as accuracy in updating member information. The AWS Advisory
Board led by member Roberto Ferrari, and its Board liaison, Secretary Peter
Blank, have been intensively discussing the Society's web site with
Headquarters staff, and are working towards a streamlined and
better-designed ARLIS/NA web site that is equipped to meet the many demands
the Society's members make of it. Treasurer Trudy Jacoby has been working
closely with accounting staff to tighten up the Society's financial
management procedures and transfer operating funds to new bank accounts.
Past-President Kathryn Wayne has been keeping an experienced eye on the
'loose ends', and ensuring that these are neatly captured. Clarke herself
participated in the recent two-day Los Angeles meeting of the Conference
Planning Advisory Committee for the 2001 annual conference, and with her
extensive experience made a valuable contribution. She has as well
negotiated the hotel contract for the 2002 joint annual conference with
VRA, to take place at the Hyatt Regency in St. Louis. Clarke is working
with the Society's publications editors, members Stephanie Segala, Betsy
Peck Learned, Linda Zieper and Paul Glassman, to effect a smooth publishing
transfer for Art Documentation, Update and the Occasional Papers. She is
as well as creating an effective working relationship with the Society's
print advertising representative, Kate Shanley. Even as they continue to
work on setting up ARLIS/NA's administrative operations, Headquarters staff
have also been addressing such membership needs as the fulfillment of
back-orders for publications. Leadership discussion lists are an
essential means of communication both for the Executive Board and for
dozens of members who volunteer their time as committees chairs, the
moderators of Divisions, Sections and Round Tables, and Chapter executives.
Transfer of all of these listservs to a new server location in Ottawa,
Canada, has been seamless and transparent for their subscribers.
In the near future, Elizabeth Clarke will be posting her own message to
introduce your new Headquarters.
