The server is probably not started. ----------------------------Original message---------------------------- Many, many thanks to all the people who generously offered their advice on where to find images of "Justice." Because several of you asked that I summarize responses for the list, I'm listing below all sources discovered to date. Justice's attributes, which can be a sword, or scales, or a blindfold, and rarely a gag, date from different eras. The scales date from the Roman era, and her blindfolding goes back only to the 16th century. Dictionaries of symbols give more information on these points. In sum, images of Justice with a blindfold are difficult to find--of those below I found #3 to be the best. Many of the others below show Justice with a sword, which seems to be the most common attribute. Also, although "Justice" is most often female, there are a few examples below of "Justice" as male. LC subject headings "law in art" and "justice in art" are very helpful. Sources for images of "JUSTICE" 1) "World Painting Index" by Patricia Pate Havlice (vol. II and supplement vol. II) lists many paintings of "justice." I have not pursued the attributes (blindfold, gag, sword, scales) of each of these. 2) Lovovico Zdekauer, "L'idea della guistizia e la sua imagine nelle arti figurative: discorso inaugurale."
