there are, of course, major artists who have illustrated children's books or
whose illustrations have been used by others to create books for children.
jacob lawrence, faith ringgold, romare bearden, jonathan green, and william
h. johnson spring quickly to mind. i would think including such literature
in art libraries, particularly in institutions which have no
information/library science library would be an excellent idea. while they
are known primarily as "illustrators," the work of such artists as leo and
diane dillon, tom feelings, and jerry pinkney, to cite only a few, is well
beyond outstanding.
