Hi Ellen,

Your colleague may find the information about SCIPIO on RLG's website
helpful: SCIPIO is a database available from RLG that contains nearly
700,000 bibliographic records for art and rare book sales catalogs.

A good place to start is the SCIPIO FAQ, which can be found at
http://www.rlg.org/aag/scipiofaq.html.

Best wishes,

T.

Subject: SALES/AUCTION CATALOGS

----------------------------Original message----------------------------
A colleague not on this list is developing a policy for sales/auction
catalogs (not exhibition catalogs) in an art museum library and would
appreciate some information about how others deal with them.

Who uses them? Curators, other museum staff, museum members, non-members?
Are they used for cost info, provenance, art history research, other?
How are particular items found in the mass of catalogs?
Do you acquire all you can, or are you selective?
Do you keep them "forever" or discard/give away? If the latter, when?
If not kept, would other art museum libraries possibly want them?
Do they have any market value, i.e. are they worth trying to sell?

Thank you very much for your assistance.
