Ben Amata Fine Arts Librarian Search Committee Chair [log in to unmask] ANNOUNCEMENT OF VACANCY FINE ARTS LIBRARIAN Under the general direction of the Head of the Reference Department, and working closely with the coordinators for Collection Development and Library Instruction, the Fine Arts Librarian is responsible for the provision of general reference service and library instruction, as well as collection development, reference services and instructional services in art, dance, design, music and theater. The Fine Arts Librarian has the following duties: Reference Services Shares responsibility for reference service to students, faculty and the general public at the Reference Desk. Schedule includes evening and weekend assignments. Assesses and anticipates information needs and evaluates effective ways of meeting them. Identifies, interprets and provides access to information resources in all formats for all disciplines. Teaches students, faculty and the general public to use print and electronic resources including bibliographic, full-text, image-based, online databases, CD-ROM and World Wide Web. Assists library users with complex reference questions and serves as a subject specialist within areas of subject expertise. Maintains regular contact with faculty and students to ascertain their information and research needs and to keep them aware of the development of the fine arts collections and services. Instructional Services Develops and delivers instructional presentations and tools for users. Incorporates appropriate electronic applications to create course specific handouts, annotated bibliographies, and instructional guides to facilitate library instruction and independent research in areas of subject specialization. Provides general and discipline specific instruction to classes on library research methods and materials. Works with classroom faculty to integrate information competencies into course assignments. Schedules appointments with students to offer research assistance as necessary. Shares the responsibility for the Library's general instruction program and assists in instruction in other disciplines as needed. Serves as a resource with the instructional faculty teaching courses related to the fine arts to provide library instruction in the specific disciplines. Provides outreach services to students, faculty, and organizations on campus. Collection Development Serves as the subject specialist and liaison in the following academic programs: Art, Dance, Design, Music, Theater and related subjects. Works closely with the faculty in these areas. Shares responsibility for selecting electronic resources. Engages in ongoing assessment of collections to support selection and de-selection decisions. Provides collection evaluation and assessment for university program reviews and justification of new curricula. Manages materials budget within areas of specialization. Works closely with faculty in areas of specialization. Other Responsibilities Assists in the establishment of library policies and procedures by active participation in departmental and library affairs. Contributes to departmental, library, campus and professional meetings as appropriate. Responsibilities as a Library Faculty Member Scholarly or creative achievement, contributions to the community, and contributions to the institution are all responsibilities of Library Faculty. Minimum Qualifications 1) M.L.S. or equivalent degree from an ALA-accredited institution or equivalent international degree (granted by August 1, 2000.) 2) Effective interpersonal skills and the ability to work with faculty and students in a culturally diverse environment. 3) Effective oral and written communication skills. 4) Ability to work effectively in a team and independently. 5) Demonstrated skill in using electronic information resources. 6) Knowledge of principles and theories of collection development. 7) Demonstrated ability to provide excellent public service 8) Degree or significant academic preparation in art, dance, design, music, or theater. 9) Ability to teach. Preferred Qualifications 1) An advanced degree in art, dance, design, music, or theater. 2) Significant academic preparation in more than one of the fine arts (art, dance, design, music, or theater.) 3) Experience working at a reference desk. 4) Demonstrated ability to effectively prepare, deliver and assess library instruction. 5) Demonstrated knowledge of web page and presentation software. 6) Knowledge of and an interest in emerging digital technologies related to the fine arts. 7) Familiarity with a non-English language(s). 8) Knowledge of principles and theories of collection development in the fine arts. Anticipating Starting Date: August 1, 2000 Position Classification: This is a probationary, twelve-month tenure-track entry level position at the Senior Assistant Librarian rank. Salary range: $46,488 - $58,740. Librarians have full faculty status and excellent benefits.
