POSITION OPENING CURATOR OF ASIAN ART (Museum Scientist/Senior Museum Scientist) History of Art Visual Resources Collection University of California, Berkeley $32,048-$48,179 / $38,800-$58,200 Job # 02-348-30/SL ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT The History of Art Visual Resources Collection at the University of California at Berkeley is a major repository of visual materials including approximately 375,000 35mm slides and 225,000 mounted photographs documenting the history of world art. This year we will begin to add digital images to our collection. Materials in this collection support the teaching and research needs of 12 full-time faculty, and 72 graduate students. Courses taught at Berkeley cover the entire span of European, North American (excluding Native American), and Asian art. A new faculty appointment will soon include African art. MAJOR DUTIES OF THE POSITION Under the general supervision of the Curator of Visual Resources, the Curator of Asian Art catalogs and classifies slides and photographs of Asian art and enters this data into an inhouse database management system. Other duties include repair and/or re-cataloging of existing material, and modification and/or extension of the existing classification system if necessary to accommodate new material. Shares responsibility with other curatorial staff for student training, binding, filing, circulation, and patron assistance. Additional duties at the Senior Museum Scientist level: Supervisory position. Serves as primary supervisor of student employees. Responsible for coordination of daily operational aspects (work-flow, supplies, student scheduling) of the Visual Resource Collection, in addition to all of the above. THE SUCCESSFUL CANDIDATE Graduation from college with a degree in the History of Art or equivalent related work experience. Working knowledge of Asian Art and at least one Asian language. Strong analytical, organizational, and interpersonal skills. Effective oral/written communication skills. Ability to work independently, set priorities, and take initiative. Ability to function well under pressure of deadlines and with frequent interruption, while paying strict attention to details. Computer literate. At the Senior Museum Scientist level: All of the above plus some supervisory experience in a Visual Resources, library, or museum setting. Preferred qualifications: MA in History of Art, knowledge of Western, African, Egyptian and/or Ancient Near Eastern art, some experience working in a Visual Resources Collection. Experience in database management, web-design, or image scanning highly desirable. Appointment will be made at either the Museum Scientist or Senior Museum Scientist level, based on qualifications and experience.
