Error - unable to initiate communication with LISTSERV (errno=10061, phase=CONNECT, target=127.0.0.1:2306). The server is probably not started. ----------------------------Original message---------------------------- I know of one public library system which uses a "closed reference" system. This operates essentially as a small reserves system whereby materials categorized as highly desirable, rare, valuable, often stolen, often vandalized, etc. are given to patrons for use within the library. Patrons must leave their library cards or some form of identification. The books are located behind the reference desk - they are visible but kept in a restricted area. One solution for academic libraries may be to have space for both a reserves section as well as a closed reference area behind the reference desk. In my own special library, materials are kept in my office and patrons must ask for them. Both of these options are bothersome from a privacy point of view but we prefer not to lose the materials.
