Assistant Curator, Special Collections

The North Carolina State University Libraries invites applications and
nominations for the position of Assistant Curator, Special Collections.
This position offers the successful applicant the unique opportunity to
participate in the collection development  and donor relation activities
of the department, while, at the same time, expanding his or her
creative technological skills.

The Special Collections Department (comprised of University Archives,
Rare Books, and Manuscripts) is building an innovative, multidimensional
special collections program in support of the university's land-grant
mission and the Libraries' strengths in information technology. Major
collecting initiatives currently underway include architecture and
design, engineering, and history of technology.  Planned initiatives
include general and special collections condition assessments, rare book
collection analysis, records management, electronic records, and
development of new collecting areas in manuscripts and rare books.

Responsibilities

Under direction of the department head, manages organization and
technical services for archival and manuscript collections administered
by the department, including management of its Web site and its Minaret
database of finding aids.  Develops and manages long-term plan for
automation of holdings. Has some responsibility for collection
development, including working with potential donors of manuscript
collections. Assists in formulating departmental policies.  Participates
in library planning, serves on library-wide committees, task forces, and
teams and is expected to be active professionally.

Qualifications

Required:   ALA-accredited MLS with concentration in special collections
or archival administration, or equivalent. Minimum of three years=92
relevant professional experience. Knowledge of applications of current
and emerging technologies as they contribute to meeting access needs of
library clients, especially Web technologies. Excellent oral, written
and interpersonal communication skills. Ability to work independently
and as a member of a team.

Preferred:   Professional experience in an archives or manuscript
repository=3B supervisory experience=3B knowledge of SGML, XML, HTML, and
Minaret collection management software.

Salary and Benefits
The Libraries offers a competitive salary commensurate with experience.
Librarians have academic status without tenure or rank.  Benefits
include:  26 days vacation, 12 days sick leave=3B health insurance
(comprehensive major medical or HMO)=3B and state, TIAA/CREF or other
retirement options.  Additional and optional dental, life, disability,
deferred compensation, and legal plans are available. Tuition waiver
program for all campuses of The University of North Carolina is
available. Relocation allowance.
